Magis Americas

Advancing Education and Life Skills in Latin America and the Caribbean

About Magis Americas

We are an independent tax exempt nonprofit organization based in New York City. We work closely with a partner nonprofit organization based in Caracas, Centro Magis, and with two very large educational networks in Latin America, the International Federation of Fe y Alegría and AUSJAL, an association of Jesuit universities in Latin America.

Headed by a leader of the Jesuit education community in Latin America, Magis Americas' Board of Directors is made up of representatives from the Jesuit Conference of Latin American Provincials, from the USA Jesuit Conference, and from Latin America's largest private foundation, Fundación AVINA (see biographies).

The Chief Executive Officer of Magis Americas, Bruce Schearer, is a nonprofit leader with wide experience in the establishment of public private partnerships to combat poverty and advance community development in Latin America, Africa and Asia (see biography).

We are devoted to building broad-based alliances and action partnerships to advance the availability of high-quality education and life skills throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

Here at Magis Americas, we strive every day to:

  • Reflect inwardly
  • See others with love and compassion
  • Live gratefully
  • Proceed from abundance
  • Advance common purposes
  • Accept and adapt to what unfolds.

The term "Magis" (pronounced màh-gis) is a Latin word that means "the more." The Jesuits use Magis to refer to the philosophy of doing more for others.
