Advancing Education and Job Training in Latin America and the Caribbean

High-Quality Formal Education

Challenge:

As wealth and power grow more concentrated within certain segments of the population in Latin America and the Caribbean, Fe y Alegría has observed that knowledge is becoming a divisive tool. Those with high-quality education and access to technology are moving forward in our globalized world, while those without these resources become poorer and more marginalized, denied an equal standing in their societies.

Goal:

With its 16-country network of high-quality schools, Fe y Alegría seeks to help the poor of Latin America escape poverty and achieve their dreams. The goal is to improve the quality of education in marginalized communities, increase the number of children and youth being educated, and to significantly increase the rates of school completion in the communities.

Five-Year Development Plan:

In 2005, Fe y Alegría instituted a five-year development plan to guide its efforts to provide better education for the poor. "Program 1" of this plan deals with formal, in-school elementary and secondary education, and creating a high-quality educational program that responds to the needs of the communities. Fe y Alegría seeks to help students develop into active, free-thinkers with the knowledge, abilities and values needed to improve their quality of life and improve their surroundings.

The following projects all represent initiatives or practical needs that will allow Fe y Alegría to achieve this mission.
