Advancing Education and Job Training in Latin America and the Caribbean

Public Action and Community Outreach

Challenge:

On a daily basis, governmental authorities do not recognize the role of civil society and other actors in the decision-making process or in issues that are understood to be the State's responsibility. Government in Latin America must become more inclusive of all segments of society, providing spaces for discussion and collaboration, and sharing responsibilities by incorporating social actors and social capital as new agents of management and public policy.

Goal:

Fe y Alegría's aim is to encourage the development of more inclusive States by incorporating the civil and private sectors into public policy-making. To do this, the organization has established a goal of creating an effective, efficient model of public education that relies on collaboration between the public and private sectors.

Five-Year Development Plan:

With the ultimate goal of generating public education policies that are inclusive and participatory, Fe y Alegría is working to create platforms for dialogue between civil society and the State. It is developing and implementing methodological and practical instruments for involving civil society and private sector in the design, execution, evaluation and dissemination of educational policies, allowing the experience to be replicated in other communities or countries.

The following projects all involve local communities in some way and are based on collaboration across sectors. Fe y Alegría works with universities, local and national governments, and civic organizations to share knowledge and encourage participation and collaboration from all members of society.
